The Risks & Pitfalls of Data Recovery Software, what the software
companies don't tell you.
There are many data recovery software based solutions available through various vendors on the Internet. Prices for the
software are generally in the $49 to $99 range. Many offer demos with varying degrees of functionality disabled. All promise
to recover data for various operating systems, mostly Windows, and a multitude of file system types.

Many promise to recover data from accidental file deletion, formatted hard drives, damaged or deleted partitions, to total
erasure by a virus. Many advertise their software as a cheaper alternative to in-lab based services. What they don't tell you,
is the dangers of attempting a data recovery using their software.

In over 50% of all cases, software based data recovery can actually destroy any chance of ever achieving a successful
recovery.  Based on actual studies, over 52% of crashed hard drives have an internal physical fault requiring a class 100 clean
room and a hard drive repair technician. This is necessary to prevent further damage to the drive and make it possible to
retrieve the data.
In order to understand this article it is necessary to go over a few basic things
about hard drives and how they work:

A Hard Drive is a physical device with moving parts that stores data on a metal disc
(called the platter)  inside the device. There  is a part inside the device called a
"read-write head". It actually hovers over the metal disc during operation. The
distance between the read-write head and the platter is less the width of a human
hair. The read-write head and platter do not actually touch during normal operation. In
many cases, where a hard drive has crashed, the read-write head is coming into
contact with the platter causing irreversible damage to the platter and literally turning
the data stored in that area into dust. Also, the read write head incurs damage
causing it to lose the ability to read or write data to the platter.
Highlights:
* Data Recovery Software only works on hard drives which are not physically
   damaged
* Data Recovery Software cannot repair a physically damaged hard drive
* Over 50% of all crashed drives must be repaired in order to retrieve data
* Data Recovery Software may actually over-write (replace) the user data if installed
to the same drive as the data drive
* Software based recovery ignores the fact that continuing to run a damaged hard
drive greatly increases the chance of permanent data loss and failure.
* Data Recovery software cannot properly diagnose or inform a user about the
true physical condition of a hard drive
* Data Recovery Software will only work on hard drives which have no physical
damage or faults. Hard drive repair requires a class 100 clean room and certified
   drive repair technician

A hard drive crash is a general term basically meaning that the data stored on the drive is no longer accessible by the user.
Although there are instances in which data recovery software may work, software based recovery does not diagnose any
potential hardware issues inside the hard drive, in fact it ignores any possibility of this and continues to run the drive
irrespective of the damage which may be continuing to get worse. In this event, the user data is in serious jeopardy.
